5 OF THE HEALTHIEST FOODS

Cram these into your diet if you wanna have that summer bod.

 

  1. GARLIC

Why is it good?

Garlic is high in anti-oxidants.  It prevents heart disease, cancer and hypertension.  If you’re feel you’re coming down with something (and it’s nearing the Matric dance), swallowing a clove or two might just be the cure to boost your immune system. 

 

  1. BANANAS

Why is it good?

Bananas’ high potassium content can help with the functioning of the heart, muscles and nerves.  So if you’re training, bananas will help with the muscle operations.  For your bones, calcium is necessary, so it is important that you eat bananas cos it helps keep in the calcium from being washed away through your urine.  Having one before you train can give you that extra edge to put in more with your workout!

 

  1. CRANBERRIES

Why is it good?

Cranberries are good for you cos they’re a really cool Irish band – Nah, just kidding… Stuffed with proanthocyanidins, these little berries (which you can find in drinks too!) will help your urinary tract.  Your heart will remain a happy little thing if you drink about 250 -300ml a day of the stuff.

 

  1. ORANGES & LEMONS

Why is it good?

CITRUS products are really the way to go.  Oranges, naartjies and grapefruit are rich in antioxidants.  These flavoured fruits help in preventing the risk of heart disease as well as other eye-related problems.  Rich in flavanones, citrus fruits can help in reducing risks of cancer.

 

  1. TUNA

Why is it good?

Tuna has omega-3 fatty acids, which helps to lower cholesterol levels in the bloodstream.  Other dark-skinned fish is also beneficial.  Research shows that hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, depression, dry eye syndrome can be reduced in their risks if tuna is ingested regularly.  Just don’t add butter-sauce cos there’s too much fat in it!
